On DoorDash or Uber Eats, time and miles rise together. On Instacart they come apart. A big batch might be 45 minutes of shopping and 12 minutes of driving. That makes your cost per hour the number to watch, not your cost per mile.
Instacart batch pay combines a base amount, a heavy pay bump for orders with bulk items like water or pet food, a peak boost when demand is high, and the customer's tip. Tips can be adjusted for up to 24 hours after delivery, in either direction.

A batch paying $22 sounds strong next to a $9 food order. But if it takes 55 minutes of shopping and driving combined, it is $24 an hour. A food order paying $9 that takes 15 minutes is $36 an hour. The larger number is not automatically the better job.
Work it the other way and the picture is clearer. Take a $22 batch, 8 miles of driving, 55 minutes door to door, in a minivan at $0.43 a mile:

Instacart paid the full $22.00. Nothing was deducted by anyone. The $6.86 difference is your vehicle and your tax bill, and the hourly figure at the bottom is the only one that compares fairly against any other work you could have taken.
Fewer miles means the cost per mile hurts less than it does on food delivery. But Instacart batches involve heavy loads, and a large order will not fit in every car.

No. Instacart shoppers are independent contractors and fuel is their own cost. It is tax deductible but paid out of pocket first. On an 8 mile batch, fuel and wear run from about $2.56 in a car to $4.16 in a cargo van.
A minivan or SUV. Instacart batches involve bulk items and large orders that will not fit in a small car, and the extra running cost is offset by being able to take the batches that pay most. This is the opposite of food delivery, where a small efficient car wins.
It depends on how you value your time. Instacart batches pay more per job but take longer because of the shopping. DoorDash orders pay less but turn over faster. Compare them on take-home per hour worked, not on the size of the offer.
